On both attempts, I found I couldn’t make much use of the army that comes from the south beyond demolishing a couple of trade workshops I could not reunite it with my main forces and the enemies overwhelmed this army quite rapidly. I attacked Astrakhan, Ryazan and Sarai in that order. Even so, the enemy attacks posed a real threat and I had to support my advances with further castles and plenty of production buildings. On a retry I was defensive, prioritising a castle. I did try to recover from adversity, but the enemies did a good job of finding where I was trying to re-establish myself and soon it became hopeless. Buoyed by my success in the first two scenarios, I was somewhat complacent and was surprised to be overwhelmed after a while of peaceful building up by a formidable cavalry army. The third scenario has a wintery setting for a change. By the time the betrayal came, my new enemy had no chance and fell to waves of cavalry and rams and skirmishers flooded into their base. I liked the objective to surround Herat with towers, which I thought was creative and works quite well, with Herat making efforts to take the towers down rather than just letting it happen. However, allies frequently provide villagers and cavalry units, so again it’s not especially difficult. The second scenario is a more elaborate setup, with a number of enemy cities to attack which put up a reasonable amount of resistance. As usual, my approach was to secure land by building castles and putting archers in them. It’s quite an enjoyable build and destroy mission with a choice of enemies to destroy but not a difficult one. I suppose this kind of thing is why the campaign is rated with the single sword icon for difficulty. The first scenario starts with a fortified and well provided for base, and a whole bunch of troops of different kinds, and there are plenty more troops to find around the map. The Tamerlane campaign looked promising, and I was curious to compare it with Mark Stoker’s version. However, after a few frustrating failed attempts at the second scenario (which I’ll cover later) I decided to put a pin in that and try something else. I thought I would try the Le Loi campaign, which I have heard is especially difficult.
